Softball Sweeps First Fall Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Sun Devil Softball team wrapped-up their first fall tournament Saturday afternoon in Tempe as they beat Phoenix College 8-1, Mesa Community College 8-3 and Central Arizona College 10-0. The Sun Devils are now 6-0 in the fall season and will be back in action again this weekend as they kick off their second fall tournament Friday November 9 in Tempe at ASU's Farrington Stadium.
In game one, CJ Carlson and Megan Elliott launched back to back homeruns to lead the Sun Devils to an 8-1 victory over Phoenix College.  Elliott also picked up the win, to go 2-0 in the fall season, allowing five hits and striking out five.  Leadoff hitter Jessica Mapes, reached base 3 out of 4 times to spark the offense, which has now scored a total of 73 runs in their first 6 games.
Game two, the Sun Devil hitters showed great patience at the plate, drawing five first inning walks en route to an 8-3 win over Mesa Community College. Senior Jackie Vasquez had a stellar day on offense, with a 3 for 3 performance, including a double and two runs scored.  Mandy Urfer notched her second victory of the fall, scattering 7 hits and going the distance.

In game threee to wrap the tournament, All-American, Katie Burkhart tossed a one-hit gem as the Sun Devils concluded their first of three fall tournaments with a 10- 0 over Central Arizona College.  Only one Vaquera batter would reach base successfully, but was stranded after Burkhart fanned the next two batters.  The final line for Burkhart would be one hit, zero walks and nine strikeouts. Jessica Ware had a perfect day at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a walk and 2 runs scored and Kaitlin Cochran added a monstrous home run in the 4th inning. 

With the win ASU stands at a perfect 6-0 for the fall and will next see action on Friday November 9 at 3:00 at Farrington Stadium in the opening game of their second fall tournament.  Admission is free.
