Nov. 6, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- California junior forward Valerie Barnes has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 30-Nov. 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Barnes, from Martinez, Calif., scored both game-winning goals for the Golden Bears over the weekend as California swept through the state of Washington.
On Friday against Washington State, Barnes followed up Alex Morgan's rebounding shot off the crossbar to give the Bears their eventual margin of victory, 2-1.
The junior returned on Sunday with another put back goal, this time off of Caroline Lea's crossbar ringer, and the Bears took a 2-1 victory from the Huskies.
The Golden Bears (12-5-0, 4-3-0 Pac-10) will look to finish the season strong and solidify their postseason hopes as they travel to Oregon and Oregon State this weekend. They will take on the Beavers on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. before traveling down the road to face the Ducks on Sunday, November 11 at 11 a.m.
This is Barnes' first weekly honor and the second for the Golden Bears this year as freshman Alex Morgan received the award on Oct. 2.
