No. 7 Cal Men's Swimming Travels to Stanford for Triple-Distance Meet

Nov. 6, 2007

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 7-ranked California men's swimming team will be traveling across the bay Wednesday to compete in the annual Stanford 'Triple-Distance' competition, held at 2:30 p.m. at the Avery Aquatic Center on the Stanford campus. Diving competition will begin at 1 p.m.

Wednesday's meet is unofficial and will not count towards either team's dual-meet record, but will feature some of the very best swimmers in the NCAA competing in a non-standard event schedule. Athletes divide into specialty groups that compete with one another in three races to determine a specialty champion in each of swimming's six event domains: sprinters (50, 100, 200 free), distance swimmers (200, 500, 1000 free), butterflyers (50, 100, 200 butterfly), breaststrokers (50, 100, 200 breaststroke), backstrokers (50, 100, 200 backstroke) and individual medlyists (100, 200, 400 IM).

Divers will be competing in one-meter and three-meter events and the winner will be decided by the highest score total of two designated divers from each team.

The divers will also take to the pool in unofficial competition, and the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays will finish out the day. Individual champions will be recognized in each domain as the athlete with the fastest cumulative times from three events.

Cal, under the direction of first-year coach David Durden, is 2-0 in home dual meet competition this season, topping Pacific, 133-116, on Oct. 5; and defeating Pac-10 opponent Washington, 153.50-106.50, on Nov. 2 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. No. 3-ranked Stanford has dual meet victories over LSU and Washington. The Golden Bears are led by senior Dominik Meichtry, the 2006 NCAA runner-up in the 200 free, plus eight other returning All-Americans.

Following the Stanford Triple-Distance meet, Cal will next travel to the Hoosier Invitational, Nov. 15-17, in Bloomington, Ind.
