Nov. 12, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University senior free safety Husain Abdullah has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
Abdullah, a senior from Pomona, Calif., helped the Cougars to a 33-17 win over Stanford last weekend as he recorded 14 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, along with an interception and two pass break-ups. After the Cougars pulled ahead by nine with just over three minutes remaining against Stanford, Abdullah sealed the win by intercepting a Tavita Pritchard pass and returning it 55 yards for a touchdown, his fourth interceptions this season and first career score.
The 14 tackles matches a career-high set two weeks ago at California. Over his last six games Abdullah has racked up a total of 64 tackles, averaging 10.7 in that span. He currently leads the Cougars in tackles at 8.1 per game, which ranks tied for 13th in the conference.
The award marks the first of Abdullah's career and he is the first Cougar this season to receive the conference honor.
