Nov. 15, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University Head Tennis Coach Lisa Hart has signed Ioana Oprea and Elisabeth Fournier to National Letters of Intent for the 2008-09 season, it was announced Thursday.

'We are thrilled that Ioana and Elisabeth will be joining the Cougar family,' Hart said. 'They both have the talent and experience to make an immediate impact in our program.'

Oprea is a left-handed player from Bucharest, Romania. She has been ranked as high as number three in the Romanian national junior rankings as well as 1187 in the Women's Tennis Association rankings and 100 in the European Tennis Association rankings.

'Ioana's playing experience at the WTA level will bring added strength and depth to our line-up,' Hart said. 'I see her personality as a great fit with our team's philosophy and we expect Ioana will have a very bright future at WSU.'

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Fournier has proven to be one of the top junior tennis players in her country. With a Canadian junior ranking consistently in the top 10, Fournier's accomplishments are highlighted by placing third in the 14-and-under Canadian National singles and doubles championship, winning the doubles championship at the St. Maarten International Tournament and as a singles and doubles semi-finalist in two International tournaments in Mexico.

'Elisabeth embodies all of what our program desires in a student-athlete,' Hart said. 'Her intellect and tenacity on and off the court will inevitably lead to her success as an athlete as well as a student at WSU.'

Oprea and Fournier are the first student athletes to sign National Letters of Intent with WSU tennis for the 2008-09 school year. Both will enroll at WSU for the 2008 fall semester.
