Cougars Ready For First Road Game of 2007-08

FIRST GLANCE: The Cougars (0-2) travel to Cheney, Wash., to play Eastern Washington (1-1) in their first road game of the season. The Cougars and Eagles square off Sunday (Nov. 18) at 2:05 p.m., at Reese Court.

LAST TIME OUT: Betteridge and Appleton each scored in double figures against Santa Clara Nov. 13, but the Cougars were unable to hold off a late charge and fell 62-52 to the Broncos. Appleton scored 11 points, and nearly recorded a double-double by adding a team-high nine rebounds. Betteridge scored a team-high 12 points against the Broncos.

SCOUTING EASTERN WASHINGTON: The Eagles are coming off a 74-68 home loss to Nevada Nov. 13, after winning their season-opener against Montana Tech (63-48), Nov. 11. Freshman Kyla Evans has made 8-of-10 attempts from the 3-point line in her first two collegiate games, and is averaging a team-best 18.5 points per game. Junior Katy Baker is averaging 18.0 ppg.

THE SERIES: WSU leads the all-time series between the two schools 25-10, including a victory last season in Pullman (76-60). The Cougars lost their last game played in Cheney (57-54, Jan. 3, 2006), but won each of the five previous contests played on the road.

NEXT UP: WSU travels to Freeport, Grand Bahamas, for the Junkanoo Jam Basketball Tournament, Nov. 23-24. The Cougars will square off against North Carolina State Nov. 23 at 12:30 p.m., and play either Alabama or Eastern Michigan Nov. 24 in the second round.

DAUGHERTY'S FIRST CLASS: WSU Head Coach June Daugherty announced the signing of seven players to National Letters of Intent, Nov. 14. Her first recruiting class at WSU included five All-Americans and five individuals ranked by various publications. The future Cougars include: Katie Grad (Auburn, Wash.), Jessica Oestreicher (Redding, Calif.), April Cook (Long Beach, Calif.), Danielle Lenoir (Los Angeles), Lexie Pettersen (Spokane, Wash.), Rosie Tarnowski (Philadelphia, Penn.) and Jazmine Perkins (Berkeley, Calif.).

RECRUIT RANKINGS: Blue Star Basketball ranked Daugherty's inaugural recruiting class as the 16th-best in the country, and second-best in the Pacific-10 Conference.

COUGAR HEAD COACH June Daugherty: With a career record of 314-213 entering this season, veteran coach June Daugherty is exactly what the Cougars needed. The first-year WSU head coach has a proven history of turning programs around. At Boise State (1989-96) she compiled a record of 123-74, led the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, achieved their first-ever national ranking and won their first regular season conference title. At Washington (1996-2006) Daugherty led the Huskies to the Pacific-10 Conference title in 2001, their first since 1990. She also led Washington to nine postseason appearances in 11 seasons, six NCAA Tournament appearances and three WNIT appearances, making it all the way to theNCAA Women's Basketball Championship's Elite Eight in 2001.

COUGARS ON TV: Three of WSU's games this season are scheduled for live television broadcast. The Cougars' matchup with Washington in Seattle (Feb. 3) is slated to air on FSN, while the home contests with Washington (Jan. 4) and Oregon State (Feb. 15) will air on FSN Northwest. WSU has had more games selected for television this season than in any other since 2001-02.
