Ely Allen Named Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year
Nov. 20, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington senior forward Ely Allen was named Co-Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Year and six Huskies were named to the All-Pac-10 Team, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
In addition to his Player of the Year honor, Allen (Kent, Wash.) was selected to the All-Pac-10 first-team along with junior midfielder George John (Shoreline, Wash.) Second-team honorees included senior forward Kevin Forrest (Edmonds, Wash.) and junior midfielder Raphael Cox (Tacoma, Wash.), while sophomore defender Casey Cunningham (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshman forward Ellis McLoughlin (Seattle, Wash.) earned honorable mention nods.
Allen becomes the third player in Washington history and the second in as many years to be named Pac-10 Player of the Year, joining Forrest (2006) and C.J. Klaas (2004). He shares the honor this year with California senior midfielder Andrew Jacobson. Allen and Klaas hold the distinction of being the only two players to earn Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and Pac-10 Player of Year honors during their careers.
A two-time All-Pac-10 first-team selection and the 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Allen finished the regular season leading the conference in points (24), goals (11) and goals per game (.058), and also tied for the first in game-winning goals (four). His 11 goals are a career-high, eight of which he scored in Pac-10 play. Allen was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on Oct. 30 as he scored the team's lone goal in a 1-0 upset of UCLA. He tallied two multiple goal games with a hat trick versus San Diego State (Oct. 19) and two goals versus Stanford (Nov. 11).
John earned his second All-Pac-10 honor but first first-team nod. As a sophomore last year, he was an All-Pac-10 second-team honoree and was named to the NSCAA adidas All-Far West Region team as well. John, who is a central midfielder for the Huskies, has tallied two goals and one assist this season.
Forrest, whose career was cut short this year after suffering a foot injury in mid-October, earned his third All-Pac-10 honor after a pair of first-team nods in 2004 and 2006. Forrest was the conference leader in scoring before he went down with the injury. He still ended the season with six goals and three assists for 15 points, which is second on the Husky team. Forrest was the 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Year and a preseason candidate for this year's MAC Hermann Trophy.
Cox earned his first career All-Pac-10 honor with his second-team selection. The wide midfielder is tied for third on the team with three goals and is fourth in points with eight. It is also the first career selection for Cunningham and McLoughlin. Cunningham has played mainly as a center back for the Huskies, helping the team tally seven shutouts. McLoughlin, a member of the U-17 U.S. National Team, had a late start with the squad but ended up third in goals (three) and points (nine). He also tied for the team lead in assists (three).
Other conference honors announced today included Stanford's Bobby Warshaw named Freshman of the Year and California's Kevin Grimes named Coach of the Year.
The Huskies will next host Portland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
