Kevin Grimes Named 2007 Pac-10 Coach of the Year

Nov. 20, 2007

BERKELEY - California men's soccer head coach Kevin Grimes was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season and fourth time overall, and six Golden Bears were awarded spots on the All-Pac-10 team, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Frei, senior midfielder Andrew Jacobson and midfielder/forward Luke Sassano earned first-team all-conference recognition. Jacobson was also selected as the Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year.

Grimes led the Bears to their second consecutive conference title and their seventh year in a row of earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Cal's bid was also the 14th in the history of the program.

Grimes, in his eighth year at Cal, is the only coach to have garnered the Pac-10 Coach of the Year honor in men's soccer more than once, having now won four times overall in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Grimes has an overall record of 92-56-15 at Cal, and currently ranks fourth in all-time wins for men's soccer at Berkeley.

This season, Grimes guided the Bears to a 6-3-1 conference record, 11-5-2 overall, and a College Cup first-round home match against UC Davis.

Jacobson is one of the three captains for the Golden Bears. He ended the regular season with nine points (3 goals, 3 assists) and led the team in shots (41). He scored two of his goals against San Diego State on Oct. 12 and the other on Senior Day against UCLA. This marks the third time he earned first-team all-conference honors, Jacobson shares his Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year honors with Ely Allen from Washington.

Sassano is another captain on the team. He ended the regular season on a high note, notching five points (1 goal, 3 assists). Against UCLA on Senior Day, Sassano had one assist and scored the game-winning goal.

Frei turned in some strong performances as the Bears' goalkeeper in 2007. Frei leads the Pac-10 in shutouts (9), save percentage (.868) and saves per game (4.39), notching back-to-back shutouts three different times. He had a career-best 12 saves in a match against Santa Clara (Sept. 16).

Two Bears collected second-team honors, freshman forward Andrew Wiedeman and senior forward Javier Ayala-Hil. Wiedeman, who leads the Bears in points (16) and goals (6), was named Pac-10 Player of the Week and selected to the Soccer America Men's Team of the Week and the College Soccer News' National Team of the Week on Oct. 9 for his six-point weekend against Washington on Oct. 5 and Oregon State on Oct. 7. He earned two assists against the Huskies and scored the first two goals in the Bears' 3-0 win over the Beavers. He is also tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals with four.

Ayala-Hil, Cal's third co-captain in 2007, garnered Soccer America National Team of the Week honors after recording four points (1 goal, 2 assists) on Senior Day in Cal's 3-1 victory over UCLA. He currently leads the team in assists (5) heading into the postseason. In the Bear's win against Stanford on Oct. 20, he had an assist on the game's only goal and recorded three shots on goal.

Junior defender Tyler Barry also earned honorable mention recognition.
