BERKELEY - California vs. UC Davis
NCAA College Cup First Round
Postgame Press Conference Quotes

Head coach Kevin Grimes:
'I thought it was a great game by both teams, a well-played match. I think both teams put a lot of effort and a lot of their will power on the line and everybody put together a good performance. Sometimes it just comes down to getting your chance and taking it, and I think that's what we did in the second overtime.'

On UC Davis:
'I think they should be very proud of their season. They won a lot of games. They came in second place in their conference, a very difficult conference, the Big West. They were certainly well deserving of being in the playoffs. All of their players are high-level kids and play to very good standards. I think for them, it's probably just getting back to next season and re-grouping, but I don't think they have anything to be ashamed of. They had a fantastic year, got into the playoffs and it was well-deserved by them.'

On playing Virginia Tech:
'We're just going to regroup together as a team and continue to prepare like we have for all our games and look forward to competing in the next match.'

Midfielder Andrew Jacobson:
'No matter what game it is, it's important to get the first goal. We just went for it. Both teams were going for it and sometimes it just falls that way.'

'It's always tough. It was a tough game. They're a great team; they work hard and pressure well. We knew it was going to be a fight from the beginning.'

Forward Andrew Wiedeman:
'We utilized Luke's long throw, it's always a deadly weapon, it's just like a cross. We knew what was coming. We have a lot of tall guys who are good in the air, so they were able to get up and get in the goalie's way to make it so he couldn't get a clean catch on it and the ball went right to me. It was nice, I got the easy part. It's always a great feeling to get the game winner. It was definitely a team effort, a collective effort and it felt good for everybody.'

Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer:
General Comments
'It was a typical UC Davis game. That certainly has been how we played all season. A little bit boring; the other team gets the better of us in the first half. We tend to turn it on in the second half and start going at teams. I thought we did exactly that and got our goal to tie it. In overtime, it's anybody's game. I thought we played well enough to win the game; we created some chances, unfortunately we didn't put it in. Overall I'd say it must have been exciting for the fans to watch.'

'You know all the typical coaching clichés. I was proud of the way the guys played. It's a huge accomplishment for what we went through, going from a Division II team and trying to recruit student-athletes with the mentality that they couldn't play for a championship for a couple years of their career. I was fortunate to get a bunch of good kids in the program who believed what I was selling them. To come down here and play in the NCAA Tournament, to make the NCAA Tournament, represent the Big West and UC Davis, I think it's a huge tribute to the student-athletes. It's tough and hard to swallow, but Cal is a good team and hopefully we will meet them again some time soon.'

On today being 'day one of next season':
'I feel like we have a pretty good base of players that are all legitimate Division I players. Hopefully it will motivate them to want to continue with the success. I saw the Cal program seven or eight years ago and Kevin Grimes has built the team up. Hopefully we can build up UC Davis soccer and compete in the NCAA Tournament in future years.'

Midfielder Sule Anibaba
On Cal's first goal
'Right before the goal, I happened to be subbed out so I saw the angle of the goal. It was a very nice goal. We were playing pretty well, we had our chances. We had eight shots in the first half and they only had four, unfortunately one of them hit net. We just had to keep our heads up; we had plenty of time to come back.'

On UC Davis being ranked sixth in the Big West before the season started:
'Last year, we finished second in the conference and before the season coach sent us an email saying that we were ranked second to last. That was shocking. I thought we deserved way better than that. We had a chip on our shoulder and wanted to prove people wrong. When somebody counts you down you just have to go above their expectations. It was very nice to see our name on ESPN2 saying we were playing Cal. Unfortunately we didn't get the `W.''

Forward Quincy Amarikwa
On Cal's goal:
'Going through the game we knew we had a lot of opportunities. That guy had a one in a million shot, but it was a nice shot. We knew we just had to keep pressing it and eventually we would get it, it was just a matter of time. We didn't count ourselves out for a minute.'

On UC Davis being ranked sixth in the Big West before the season started:
'It shows the lack of respect other teams had for us, our attack and what we are capable of doing. We just wanted to come out and show them what we could do, and we did. We did just as well as when we weren't eligible. We made the tournament and lost in double overtime by the first place team in the Pac-10. I say that is pretty good, it shows a lot of what we can do. We even had pretty good domination of the game; we had twice as many shots on goal.'

After the game:
'In the room after (the game]), everybody's first thought was next year. How much better are we going to be next year? A lot better. Put it away in the first half next year so there isn't a double overtime. I wasn't mad at our performance today, we played really well.'

On the fan support for the Aggies:
'It is great to see that many people supporting our soccer team. It is an away game, but it's the biggest game UC Davis has ever been a part of. We wanted to show up the negative write-ups, about how we barely got in and were clearly not a good enough team. I think we showed ourselves and our fans we deserved to be here. It was great to have that support.'
