No. 17 Cal Beats UC Davis in Double Overtime

BERKELEY - In the first round of the NCAA College Cup, the No. 17 California men's soccer team defeated No. 25 UC Davis, 2-1, in double overtime Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. In front of 3,479 fans, freshman forward Andrew Wiedeman scored the game-winning goal after a throw-in from senior defender Luke Sassano to advance the Golden Bears to the second round. Cal improved to 12-5-2, while the Aggies fell to 12-5-3.

The Golden Bears got on the board first in the 33rd minute with a goal from senior Andrew Jacobson, with an assist from Sassano. Jacobsen's long-range shot got past keeper Ryan McCown to give Cal an early advantage.

The Aggies struck in the 75th minute when Quincy Amarikwa headed the ball past sophomore keeper Stefan Frei. UC Davis' Paul Cain had the assist on the goal, which ultimately pushed the game into overtime.

Wiedeman ended the game in the 102nd minute. After a throw-in from Sassano, Wiedeman blasted a shot that beat the keeper to his left and found the corner of the goal. It was Wiedeman's fifth game-winning goal of the season.

UC Davis outshot Cal, 18-14, but the Bears' successful shot on goal was the only attempt by either team in both overtime periods.

Amarikwa had a game-high three shots on goal for the Aggies while Sassano led the Bears with four shots total. Frei made seven saves for Cal between the posts and McCown had two.

The Bears travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on No. 11 seed Virginia Tech in the second round of the College Cup Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. ET.
