Dec. 5, 2007
Stanford Women's Soccer earned more accolades Wednesday as Soccer Buzz magazine named redshirt senior Rachel Buehler a Player of the Year finalist and freshman Christen Press a Freshman of the Year finalist. Fourteen players have been selected as finalists for 2007 National Player of the Year and another fourteen have been named finalists for the 2007 National Freshman of the Year. First presented in 1996, this will mark the twelfth such honorees, which will be announced in mid-December.
Press has already been named the Freshman of the Year in the Pacific-10 conference and was Second Team All-Pacific-10. She was the third Cardinal in the programs history to earn Freshman of the Year honors. Press, from Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., scored eight goals in her rookie campaign and also assisted on six other goals throughout the season despite missing the first two games of the season. Her 22 points were second on the team to sophomore Kelley O'Hara and led the Cardinal to a 15-3-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Third Round.
Buehler continues to earn postseason accolades after another strong season. She anchored the Cardinal defense and led the unit to nine shutouts on the season and a 0.74 goals-against-average. She was recently named to the U.S. Women's National Team's Training Camp roster and was named First Team All-Pacific-10.
