Dec. 4, 2007

SEATTLE - The University of Washington Women's rowing team signed eight local prep student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the recent early signing period, Coach Bob Ernst announced.

The signees are a combination of standout rowers, volleyball players, basketball players, swimmers, and track & field athletes. They include Sarah Aylard (Sidney, B.C.), Ashley Daniels (Tacoma, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran), Erin Lauber (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway), Hannah Lauth (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest), Gill Pennington (Bellevue, Wash./Issaquah), Janie Schwartz (Pacific, Wash./Auburn-Riverside), Sarah Velling (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), and Haley Yeager (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet).

'Our first priority in recruiting is to sign all of the best available athletes in our region - both rowers and Olympic sport athletes.' Coach Bob Ernst says. 'We are well on our way to accomplishing that goal.'

Sarah Aylard comes to Washington from Victoria City Rowing Club in Victoria, BC with an impressive rowing résumé. As a member of the British Columbia Provincial team at the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games, Aylard rowed to a gold medal in the women's eight, a silver medal in the women's pair, and a bronze medal in the women's coxless four. Aylard was also selected to the 2007 Canadian Junior National Team, and won a gold medal for Canada in the junior women's eight at the CanAmMex regatta.

Ashley Daniels is a two sport standout student-athlete from Evergreen Lutheran High School in Tacoma, Wash. On the basketball court, Daniels helped the Eagles to consecutive state tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. On the track, Daniels is a three year participant in the state championship meet in the discus and the shot put events. Daniels also holds the Evergreen Lutheran school record in the discus.

Erin Lauber comes to the UW from Edmonds-Woodway High School in Edmonds, Wash. with a strong family background in Husky rowing. Both of Erin's parents were rowers at UW, and her mother Madeline was the team captain of the 1981 squad. Off the water, Lauber has received numerous accolades in both volleyball and basketball. As a basketball player, Lauber has led her team as team captain for two consecutive years. As a volleyball player, Lauber is a three-time member of the All-Wesco south team, and competed in the 2007 state volleyball tournament. Lauber also rowed for Green Lake Crew during the summer of 2007.

Hanna Lauth joins the UW rowing program after a successful rowing career with the Pocock Rowing Club. In 2006, Lauth was a member of the junior women's varsity four that came in first place at the Head of the Charles, as well as a member of the Junior Women's eight that won a national championship at the U.S. Junior National Championship Regatta. In 2007, Lauth competed in the women's quad for the U.S. Junior National Team. She will be reunited with former Pocock teammates Kayleigh Mack and Courtney White on the UW women's rowing team. Lauth is currently a senior at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, Wash.

Gill Pennington is a three sport athlete from Issaquah High School. Pennington has excelled on the basketball court, leading the Eagles to three consecutive state tournament appearances from 2005-2007, with fourth-, fifth- and second-place finishes, respectively. Pennington also competed on the Eagles volleyball and track and field teams.

Janie Schwartz comes from Auburn-Riverside High School in Auburn, Wash. A member of the volleyball team, Schwartz helped her team to an undefeated regular season and a second-place performance in the state tournament this past fall.

Sarah Velling is a local athlete, competing for the Lakeside School rowing team in Seattle. Velling was a member of the Lakeside crew that placed eighth in the lightweight junior women's four at the 2007 U.S. Junior Nationals Regatta.
