Cougar Women Fall to Boise State

Dec. 9, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University junior guard Katie Appleton scored a game-high 22 points against Boise State University Saturday, but the Cougar women's basketball team dropped a tough game 71-64 at Friel Court. The Cougars fell to 2-6 on the season while the Broncos improved to 6-3.

WSU held an 11 point lead at halftime (37-26), and led for a majority of the second half. However, once WSU posted a 16 point lead with 14-minutes, 32-seconds remaining in the game, the Broncos went on a 25-8 run over the next seven and a half minutes to take the lead.

The Cougars regained the lead on a jumper from Appleton at 4:47, but the Broncos' Brittany Moore sunk two free throws to put Boise State back in the lead for good with 4:35 left.

'It's disappointing because this was definitely a winnable game,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'It's one that got away, and you have to credit Boise State. They seemed to keep their poise, even when they were down. That is something we are going to have to improve upon.'

Appleton's 22 points marked the second time in the last three games that the Big Bear Lake, Calif., native scored at least 20. She also recorded five steals for the third time this season.

Redshirt freshman Salena Dickerson added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, and sophomore Alexa Price scored a career-high nine points. Junior center Ebonee Coates saw her first game action of the season, coming back from a foot injury and recording two points, two rebounds and a steal in 15 minutes of gametime.

'I thought Ebony did a nice job,' Daugherty said. 'It's not easy to walk out there after missing six or seven games. I thought she played hard.'

The Cougars continue their season Saturday (Dec. 16) against San Jose State. The game is slated to tip-off at 2 p.m.
