Chan Leads Huskies in First Regional Tennis Rankings
Dec. 11, 2007
SEATTLE, Wash. - Three Huskies debuted in the season's first installment of the ITA Northwest Regional individual rankings. Freshman Venise Chan and sophomore Joyce Ardies are ranked in singles while Ardies and senior Tara Simpson earned a doubles ranking.
Chan, UW's top newcomer, is ranked 20th in the region to lead the Huskies. A Hong Kong native, Chan captured the Husky Invitational back in November, winning both the singles title and doubles title with Aleksandra Malovic. She went 6-2 during fall play.
Ardies (São Paulo, Brazil) cracks the rankings for the second-straight year at No. 29. She is also ranked 14th in doubles along with Simpson (Vancouver, B.C.). The pair of Husky co-captains captured the doubles title at the San Diego State Fall Classic II in early November.
'Venise, Joyce, and Tara should be pleased with the progress they made in the fall and use the rankings as further motivation,' said third-year Head Coach Jill Hultquist. 'Venise battled the flu during the fall but still showed she is ready to make a big impact for our program in dual play.'
The Husky women will open dual play with two matches in Hawai'i, the first coming on Jan. 19 vs. Sacramento State. Their home dual debut takes place Jan. 26 vs. BYU at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
