USC Great Stan Smith Honored With Davis Cup Award of Excellence

Dec. 12, 2007

In 1968, USC's Stan Smith became the eighth Trojan to win a national championship in singles. This month, he is being recognized for his long and illustrious international career as one of USC's most decorated men's tennis players. A 1972 Wimbledon champ and Davis Cup winner, Smith was honored by the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Tennis Federation as the recipient of the Davis Cup Award of Excellence.

Smith received his award on December 1 in Portland, Ore., during the Davis Cup final between Russia and the United States. The Davis Cup Award of Excellence honors individuals who best exemplify the ideals of Dwight Davis, who founded the competition 107 years ago.

Smith is also one of 15 USC players to be named to the ITA Men's Tennis Hall of Fame.
