Dec. 17, 2007
STANFORD, Calif. - Senior guard Candice Wiggins was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week Monday, one day after scoring 35 points on 11-for-22 shooting to lead the No. 5/4 Cardinal to an 87-63 victory over the No. 10/10 Baylor Bears.
Wiggins also shot 4-for-9 behind the arc and dished out three assists against the Bears, and her 35 points brought her career total to 2,000 points, making Wiggins the fifth player in Stanford history to reach the 2,000-point mark. Her defense also played a key role in the win, as the three-time All-American from San Diego had four steals in addition to blocking a pair of shots. The win brought Stanford's record on the year to 8-1, and improved the Cardinal to 2-1 against Top 10 teams this season.
The honor is the first of the 2007-08 season for Wiggins, and the sixth of her illustrious career. The recognition is also the 58th time that a Stanford player has earned the honor, leading all Pac-10 schools.
Wiggins also becomes Stanford's second Pac-10 Player of the Week of the current season. Sophomore forward Jayne Appel earned the first honor of the season on Nov. 19.
The Cardinal take a quick trip to Albuquerque this week to battle the New Mexico Lobos in a 6 p.m. PT contest. Following Tuesday's game, Stanford returns home for a pivotal clash against the top-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's contest will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net.
