Jacobson and Frei Named NSCAA First-Team All-Americans

Dec. 17, 2007

BERKELEY - California senior midfielder Andrew Jacobson and sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Frei added more honors to their fine seasons, earning spots on the NSCAA/adidas All-America first team, the coaches' association announced. Recently, Jacobson was invited to the 2007 adidas MLS Combine. Also, Jacobson and Frei were named to the NSCAA Far West All-Region first team.

'We are very proud of both Andrew and Stefan's accomplishments this year,' said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. 'Having two players earn first-team All-America honors in the same season is a great testament to the program and their teammates.'

Last year, former Cal defender Steve Purdy was a second-team NSCAA All-American. Purdy was also named an All-American through College Soccer News.

Jacobson, a native of Palo Alto, Calif., was also named the Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year and garnered All-Pac-10 first-team honors. He tied for the Cal team lead in shots (44), collected 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists) and had 15 shots on goal. On Senior Day against UCLA on Nov. 4, Jacobson scored in his final regular-season home match. Jacobson also got Cal's first goal in the Golden Bears' 2-1 victory over UC Davis in the first round of the NCAA College Cup on Nov. 23.

Frei also earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors and was selected the Pac-10 Player of the Week for his performances against Washington and Oregon State on Nov. 9 and 11, respectively. The Widnau, Switzerland, product earned his eighth and ninth shutouts of the season to guide Cal to its second straight Pac-10 championship. Frei served as the team's keeper for every minute of the year. He ended the year leading the conference in save percentage (.850), saves (91), saves per game (4.55) and shutouts (9). In Pac-10 contests, Frei also led all keepers in goals-against average (0.68).

Jacobson and Frei's play helped the Bears win their second consecutive Pac-10 title in 2007 and reach their seventh consecutive NCAA College Cup.
