DICK VITALE GIVE COACH SENDEK PROPSDick Vitale named Coach Sendek his Coach of the Week after the win over No. 17 Xavier last Saturday. Here is what he had to say:
Coach of the week: Herb Sendek, Arizona State
'He has a very young squad, though they sent a message in a blowout win over Xavier. Playing four freshmen for a good part of the game, ASU enjoyed its first home victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since Dec. 20, 1980, when the Sun Devils defeated No. 7 Ohio State.'
SERIES VS. IDAHO
ASU is 3-0 against the Vandals, but teams have not met since ASU won 103-74 on Dec. 12, 1973, the year prior to Wells Fargo Arena opening.
?Coach Herb Sendek now has 31 wins against ranked teams in his career. He notched his first at ASU last year in the final chance of the year when ASU topped No. 22 USC 68-58 on Feb. 18, 2007, and then won his first this year with the win over No. 17 Xavier (77-55) on Dec. 15. ASU had lost 22 straight games to ranked teams prior to last year¹s USC game but has now won its past two against ranked teams...sophomore Derek Glasser has made 13 straight free throws and is 48-of-59 (.814) in his career. After shooting 34.5 percent from the field last year, Glasser is shooting 51.4 percent this year...ASU has posted at least five steals in every game this year...seven player have appeared in the starting lineup...ASU is 2-0 in games decided by six points or less after going 3-12 in that category last year...junior Jeff Pendergraph has two double-doubles on the year and 15 in his career...sophomore Jerren Shipp is 18-of-37 (.486) from the three-point stripe this year after going 36-of-107 (.336) last year...sophomore Christian Polk is 41-of-52 (.788) from the foul line in his 40-game career.
ONE THIRD OF THE WAY
ASU will try to reach nine wins through 11 games for just second time in past 12 years (since reaching Sweet Sixteen with 24-9 mark in 1994-95), as it was 10-1 in 2004-2005.
ASU RECORD AFTER 11 GAMES (1995-96 TO PRESENT)1995-96: 5-61996-97: 7-41997-98: 8-31998-99: 7-41999-00: 8-32000-01: 8-32001-02: 7-42002-03: 8-32003-04: 6-52004-05: 10-12005-06: 6-52006-07: 6-5
In the win over No. 17 Xavier, ASU started four freshmen for the first time in school history. ASU freshmen accounted for 69 of 150 starts in Coach Sendek's rookie 30-game season. Through 10 games, the numbers have jumped to 100 out of 200 starts in his 40-game tenure with at least three freshmen starting each game this season. That means in his two years, ASU's starting lineup has had freshmen make 50 percent of the starts. Sophomores have made 41 starts (.205), juniors 27 (.135) and seniors 32 (.160).
ASU is shooting .740 from the free throw line (131-of-177). In his 10 seasons at NC State, Coach Sendek's teams led the ACC four times in FT percentage (including three straight seasons, 2002-04). In 2004 NC State led the nation and set the ACC record by shooting .799 from the charity stripe. While at NC State, his squads shot 71.3 percent.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
ASU earned foxsports.com 'Team of the Week' as writer Jeff Goodman said...'Herb Sendek struggled through a difficult season last year in his first at Arizona State. Now the former N.C. State coach has brought in some quality talent and it showed in the Sun Devils' upset of No. 17 Xavier in Tempe. It wasn't just the largest win over a ranked team in school history for ASU, but also the worst loss Xavier has suffered since the 1999-2000 season.'
