Men's Hoops Closes Non-Conference Slate Saturday At 2 p.m.

The men's basketball team (9-2) hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-8) of the Northeast Conference on Saturday (Dec. 29) at 2 p.m. on KTAR 620 AM. ASU is trying for its first six-game win streak since a nine-game streak from Nov. 27-Dec. 29, 2004, and just its third six-game streak in the past 13 seasons, as the 1998-99 squad also won six straight from Dec. 5-29. ASU's youngest player, James Harden (born Aug. 26, 1989), leads the team in scoring at 16.5 points per game and is shooting 80.3 percent (49-of-61) from the foul line. After Saturday, ASU opens Pac-10 play on Jan. 3 against Oregon (7 p.m./no television) followed by a Jan. 5 game against Oregon State (2 p.m. on FSN).
FREE AND LET'S MAKE IT 'AND ONE'
The 2 p.m. Dec. 29 game vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) is free to all Arizona State and Maricopa Community College students who present a student ID. In addition, all ASU students can bring a guest free to the game. Students and guests need only enter through the south gate (student entrance) for the discount and only need to have a student ID.
ASU is one of four teams who had more wins prior to the holidays than it did all of 2006-2007. The list includes Arizona State (9-2 after 8-22 last year), Iona (5-7 after 2-28 last year), Northern Colorado (5-6 after 4-24 last year) and UNC-Wilmington (8-4 after 7-22 last year).
The men's basketball team had another strong outing in the classroom this past fall, as it posted a 2.91 semester grade point average and its cumulative GPA is now 2.95. In addition, former Sun Devils Bruno Claudino (2005-2007/B.I.S) and Shawn Redhage (1999-2003/B.S. in Construction) both finished their degrees in December of 2007. Since 2004, 13 Sun Devil men's basketball players have graduated.
Sophomore Derek Glasser has made 14-of-16 (.875) free throws this year and is 49-of-61 (.803) in his 41-game career. After shooting 34.5 percent from the field last year, Glasser is shooting 46.2 percent this year. He had a career-high nine assists against Idaho on Dec. 22, the most by a Sun Devil since Antwi Atuahene had 10 vs. Oregon on Feb. 11, 2006 (most in past 47 games)...ASU has posted at least five steals in every game this year...eight players have appeared in the starting lineup...ASU is 2-0 in games decided by six points or less after going 3-12 in that category last year...junior Jeff Pendergraph has three double-doubles on the year and 16 in his career. He is averaging 17.3 points and 11.7 rebounds in his past three games...sophomore Jerren Shipp is 20-of-43 (.465) from the three-point stripe this year after going 36-of-107 (.336) last year. He has posted four straight double-figure scoring games, something he did last year just once and that was in the first four games. He is averaging 12.3 points per game in that span and had a career-best nine boards vs. Idaho...sophomore Christian Polk is 43-of-54 (.796) from the foul line in his 46-game career...freshman Ty Abbott is averaging 15.0 points in his past three games.

ASU is 9-2 through 11 games this year, its second-best mark in the past 13 seasons through 11 games. Here is a look at ASU's best marks through 12 games since the 1995-96 season as ASU opens Pac-10 season Thursday (Jan. 3) against Oregon at 7 p.m. in a non-television game.

In the 66-55 win over No. 17 Xavier on Dec. 15, ASU started four freshmen for the first time in school history. ASU freshmen accounted for 69 of 150 starts in Coach Sendek's rookie 30-game season. Through 11 games, the numbers have jumped to 102 out of 205 starts in his 41-game tenure with at least three freshmen starting in 10 games this season.
ASU is shooting .750 from the free throw line (153-of-204). In his 10 seasons at NC State, Coach Sendek's teams led the ACC four times in FT percentage (including three straight seasons, 2002-04). In 2004 NC State led the nation and set the ACC record by shooting .799 from the charity stripe. While at NC State, his squads shot 71.3 percent.
