CONFERENCE WEEKLY NOTES
PAC-10 PLAY UNDERWAY
The first round of Pac-10 play got underway last week as traditional rivals OREGON and OREGON STATE faced off in Corvallis ... The Ducks got the best of the Beavers, 76-72, marking the third straight game that the visiting team has earned the win in the women's basketball Civil War ... ARIZONA STATE, CALIFORNIA and STANFORD all earned home sweeps as they each picked up their first two wins in league play ... UCLA and USC both split in the desert, claiming the win on ARIZONA's home court, while WASHINGTON and WASHINGTON STATE head back to the Northwest after an 0-2 road trip in the Bay Area.
This year, the Pac-10 has added new postseason accolades to its list ... The Conference will continue to honor the Pac-10 Player of the Year, Pac-10 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year and Pac-10 Coach of the Year, but new to the mix this season is the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year ... In addition, the Conference will honor a 15-member All-Conference team (up from 10), as well as a five-member All-Defensive team ... The five-member All-Freshman team will also be recognized.
BACKS AGAINST THE WALL
Arizona State came into the week unranked in the Associated Press poll for the first time since the final poll of the 2004-05 season, but regained some confidence as it defended its home court with two wins over UCLA, 62-59, and USC, 66-63 ... The two much-needed victories improved the Sun Devils to 8-5 overall, and propels them into an important three-game road stretch at Oregon, Oregon State and Arizona.
Most notably in the Pac-10 injury report this week is that Arizona State JR G Danielle Orsillo will miss the remainder of the year rehabbing an injury to her left knee ... Orsillo scored a career-best 21 points in ASU's season opener at North Carolina on Nov. 11 ... Arizona standout FR F Ify Ibekwe has missed the Wildcats' last four games after suffering an eye injury in practice in mid-December ... Ibekwe earned three starts against Northern Arizona, Long Beach State and Boise State, and helped guide UA to three wins, while earning two double-doubles in the process.
Good matchups abound this week as the Huskies and Cougars battle it out in Pullman Fri., Jan. 4 for state bragging rights ... The matchup will be televised live on FSNNW ... WSU has not beat UW in its previous 24 attempts ... California and Stanford head to Los Angeles to take on UCLA and USC in first round play ... Fox Sports Net will televise the Cal-UCLA matchup on Sun., Jan. 6 at 12:30 from Pauley Pavilion ... The Trojans and the Bruins are each returning from a 1-1 desert split, while the schools from the Bay Area, both of whom are now ranked in the nation's Top-10, are coming off of an identical 2-0 homestand, defeating Washington and Washington State ... Finally, Oregon and Oregon State will host Arizona and Arizona State.
WELCOME TO THE PAC-10
Oregon State JR G Brittney Davis, a transfer from the University of Minnesota, has made a name for herself in the Beavers' first 12 games ... Davis scored a career-high 23 points against Oregon on Saturday, marking her eighth straight game in double figures, and her second straight 20-point game ... She is averaging 12.4 ppg this season, ranking 11th in the Pac-10.
ARIZONA (6-7, 0-2)

Arizona dropped its Pac-10 opener to USC by just seven points, 77-70 on Friday, and was also defeated by UCLA, 68-59 on Sunday ... JR F Amina Njonkou posted two double-doubles on the week, including a career-high 22 points and 12 rebounds against the Trojans, and 12 points and 11 rebounds in the game against the Bruins ... Njonkou ranks second in the Pac-10 with six double-doubles on the season ... SO F Rheya Neabors posted a career-high 17 points against USC as she shot 5-for-10 from the field, including two buckets from long range ... She also added six rebounds and five assists ... SR G Ashley Whisonant, one of the most consistent and reliable players in UA history as she has played in over 100 career games, ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in scoring (14.3 ppg), third in assists (4.69 apg), 10th in free throw percentage (.726), seventh in steals (1.92 spg) and first in minutes played (36.69 mpg).
ARIZONA STATE (8-5, 2-0)

Arizona State improved to 8-5 overall as it defeated both UCLA, 62-59, and USC, 66-63 in Tempe over the weekend ... The Sun Devils used second-half efforts to overcome an eight-point deficit against UCLA at halftime and an 11-point deficit against USC at the break ... In fact, ASU had to overcome its largest halftime deficit (11 points) at home since February of 2004 ... JR C Sybil Dosty was named the Dec. 31 Pac-10 Player of the Week as she averaged 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 57.9 percent from the field ... Dosty posted career-best numbers in points (20), rebounds (15) and field goals (8) while playing a season-high 25 minutes in the win over UCLA ... Dosty ranks third in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage with a 56.9 season average ... ASU will be without JR G Danielle Orsillo for the remainder of the season as head coach Charli Turner Thorne announced that she would be redshirting the year after playing in just one game this season ... Orsillo will be rehabilitating her left knee.
CALIFORNIA (11-2, 2-0)

California defeated Washington and Washington State by a combined 165-84 margin over the weekend, bringing its record to 11-2 overall, 2-0 in Conference ... RS SO G Alexis Gray-Lawson led the team with 19 points against Washington State and continued her hot shooting from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-4 treys ... For the year, she is shooting 50 percent from three-point range (27-of-54) to rank atop the league in percentage and fourth in made 3-pointers ... Gray-Lawson's performance against the Cougars helped the Bears set two records - largest margin of victory in a Pac-10 game (55) and most points scored by the Bears' women's basketball team in Haas Pavilion ... Cal is off to its best start since the 1991-92 Bears opened with a 14-2 record ... The Bears are also 2-0 in Pac-10 play for the first time since 1991-92 ... Cal has an important road trip this weekend as it heads to Los Angeles to face USC and UCLA ... The Bears went 1-1 on this road trip last year, defeating the Women of Troy, 62-53.
OREGON (7-5, 1-0)

After 16 lead changes, the battle between Oregon and Oregon State finally went the Ducks' way as they defeated their in-state rival, 76-72, to take the first round game against the Beavers in 2007-08 ... With the win, Oregon improved to 7-5 overall, 1-0 in Pac-10 play and in fourth place in the league standings ... SO G Taylor Lilley led Oregon in scoring for the third straight game as she posted 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting ... Lilley put up 12 points in the first half, and in addition sank three 3-pointers on the day ... She executed two consecutive back door layups in the closing moments of the game, scoring Oregon's last two field goals of the game, including her last with 28 seconds remaining, essentially securing Oregon's victory ... Lilley is tied for first in the Pac-10 in 3-point field goals made with 27 on the season for a 2.25 average ... UO hosts the Arizona schools this weekend, and will look for its first win against the Sun Devils since the 2004-05 season.
OREGON STATE (7-5, 0-1)

In one of the most competitive and hard-fought games of the season, Oregon State came out on the losing end of the 76-72 game with traditional rival Oregon ... JR G Brittney Davis scored a career-high 23 points, extending her double-digit scoring streak to eight games ... She was 6-for-14 from the floor, making two 3-pointers, and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe ... She also recorded four assists and a steal ... Over the last eight games, Davis is averaging 16.3 points per game and is shooting better than 51 percent from the floor ... Davis is averaging 12.4 points per game this season, good for second on the club and 11th in the Conference ... SR G Ashley Allen leads the Conference, scoring 20.3 points per game, while Davis has made a strong offensive push as of late ... With the Oregon game having come and gone Saturday, the Beavers ended their non-conference slate and finished with a 7-4 record ... The seven victories are the most OSU entered Conference play with under head coach LaVonda Wagner.

Head coach Tara VanDerveer earned career victory No. 700 with a 105-47 win over Washington State on Friday ... VanDerveer joins an elite club as only four other coaches in women's basketball history have surpassed the 700-win plateau, including Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Rutgers' Vivian Stringer, North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell and North Carolina State's Kay Yow ... Along with the WSU defeat, the Cardinal also posted a 77-42 win over Washington on Sunday to improve to 12-1 overall, 2-0 in Conference ... FR F Kayla Pedersen helped Stanford extend its season-best winning streak to nine games, averaging a double-double of 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds ... She opened the Pac-10 season with a team-leading 18 points and eight rebounds Friday night and dominated in the paint again on Sunday, posting her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds ... Stanford was a perfect 6-0 in the month of December ... SR G Candice Wiggins moved up to No. 8 on the Pac-10 career scoring charts with 2,069 points.
UCLA (6-7, 1-1)

UCLA split its desert road trip, earning a 68-59 win over Arizona in Tucson, after losing a close 62-59 battle with No. 24 Arizona State in Tempe ... The Bruins return home with a 6-7 overall record, 1-1 in Pac-10 play ... FR F Nina Earl recorded her first career double-double against Arizona, scoring a career-best 23 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds in her third start of the season ... Earl shot 57.1 percent from the field in the game and 6-for-7 from the foul line, hitting two big free throws late in the game after Arizona closed to within five points ... Earl also handled a large share of the point guard duties in the game, with FR G Doreena Campbell sitting out due to an ankle injury and FR G Darxia Morris playing just five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble ... Earl now averages 11.2 points per game, second-best on the team, and is shooting .509 from the field (58-for-114), best amongst Bruin regulars ... UCLA faces one of the toughest homestands this weekend as 2/2 Stanford and 10/11 California come to town.

SO G/F Morghan Medlock recorded her first double-double of the year, tallying new career highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds and doubling her previous career best for 3-pointers with four in USC's 77-70 win over Arizona on Friday ... Across the desert, the Women of Troy could not overcome a second-half surge by ASU on Sunday as the Sun Devils bested them, 66-63 ... The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Trojans ... USC is now 8-5 overall, 1-1 in Conference play for a tie for fifth place in the league standings ... JR C Nadia Parker paced all players with 22 points against ASU ... Parker, who leads the Pac-10 with a .641 season field goal percentage, went 10-for-14 on Sunday, playing 28 minutes, and grabbing seven rebounds ... USC hosts California and Stanford this weekend at the Galen Center ... The Women of Troy are looking to snap a four-game losing streak to California, as well as a 10-game skid to Stanford.
WASHINGTON (5-9, 0-2)

Washington dropped both of its games against 11/11 California, 66-40, and 2/2 Stanford, 77-42, over the weekend ... UW will play its third straight game on the road when it travels a short distance to Pullman for a Fri., Jan. 4 game against in-state rival Washington State ... The Huskies are looking for their first road win of the season, but have history on their side as they have not lost to WSU since the 1994-95 season, which amounts to a 24-game winning streak ... FR C Kali Bennett posted her second double-double of the season as she scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against Stanford ... FR G/F Katelan Redmon ranks first on the club and 14th in the Conference in scoring with 12.1 ppg average ... Redmon also ranks 13th in minutes played (30.50).
WASHINGTON STATE (3-10, 0-2)

Washington State returns home this week for an important game against in-state rival Washington, Fri., Jan. 4 in Pullman ... The Cougars lost two games in the Bay Area to 2/2 Stanford, 105-47, and 11/11 California, 99-44 ... JR C Ebonee Coates pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds against the Golden Bears on Sunday, the most by a Cougar in a game this season ... Coates' two blocked shots against the Cardinal moved her into sole possession of fifth place on the WSU all-time list for career blocks with 60, passing former Cougars Kate Benz (2004-07) and Keisha Moore (2005-06), who each had 59 on their careers ... SO G Alexa Price led the team in scoring both games, including a career-high 14 points against Cal ... Price was 7-for-13 from long range over the two-game stretch ... JR G Katie Appleton's 3-pointer against Cal placed her in sole possession of ninth place on the WSU all-time career list ... Appleton now has 89 career 3-point baskets.
