SEATTLE - Washington men's golf coach Matt Thurmond announced today that Garrett Clegg has joined his staff as an assistant coach.
Clegg, a native of Bountiful, Utah, is a former professional and collegiate golfer who was a member of the 2002 NCAA champion University of Minnesota squad. Clegg, who also competed at the University of Utah, joins the Husky staff that includes volunteer assistant Scott Alexander as well.
Clegg will be involved in all areas of the program including coaching, recruiting, fund-raising and tournament operations with a special emphasis on administrative duties.
'Adding Garrett to our staff will be great for me, our student-athletes and all of Husky golf,' Thurmond said. 'He brings a wide range of golf experience that includes championship success in college and a diverse professional background. He will be able to bring that experience to our guys and help guide, mentor and prepare them for more success in their futures.'
Clegg played collegiate golf at Minnesota for two years where he was a part of the 2002 NCAA championship team before transferring to Utah for his final two seasons. A 2004 graduate of Utah, Clegg was an All-Mountain West Conference selection and placed third in the conference championships in 2003. During his career with the Utes, he won the 2003 Nevada Wolfpack Invitational and the 2003 UC Riverside Invitational.
'I am excited for the opportunity to begin my coaching career at one of the top programs in the country, alongside one of the best coaches in college golf,' Clegg said. 'I was recruited by Coach O.D. Vincent and Washington was my first choice of schools. Things did not work out then, but I have always been drawn to UW and the golf team. The golf program has a legacy of success and I am excited to be able to help our program reach new heights.'
Clegg played in the 2003 U.S. Amateur and advanced to the second round of the 2002 U.S. Public Links tournament. As a professional, he played the 2007 season in the Nationwide Tour after finishing fifth in the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. In 2005, Clegg finished third at the Utah Open.
Clegg and his wife Rachael have two daughters, Grace (3) and Sophie (1).
