Women's Basketball Routs Cougars, 76-56

Pullman, Wash. - The UCLA women's basketball team captured its 15th-straight win in the series with Washington State by a score of 76-56 in a Pac-10 Conference contest played on Saturday afternoon at Friel Court on the WSU campus in Pullman, WA. The win also was UCLA's fourth in the last five games and improved the Bruins' overall record to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. The loss dropped Washington State's record to 3-13 on the year and 0-5 in the Pac-10.
The lead changed hands five times in the first four minutes of action before UCLA took an 8-7 lead on a basket by senior forward Lindsey Pluimer at the 16:26 mark which ignited an 11-0 Bruin run. A three-point play by Bruin freshman forward Nina Earl made it 17-7 with 14:03 to play.
UCLA held the Cougars scoreless for almost six minutes of first half action and improved a 23-14 lead at the 11:27 mark to 40-14 with 5:43 remaining on a pair of free throws by freshman center Regina Rogers. UCLA hit 11 of its first 16 field goal attempts in the game and finished the first half with a .655 percentage after connecting on 19 of its 29 first half shots.
The Bruins took a 56-23 lead at the halftime break. The 56 points was a season-high, bettering the 52 scored in a win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. UCLA also matched its game-high for the season with six three-point shots in the first half of play, two-each from Pluimer, freshman guard Doreena Campbell and sophomore guard Erica Tukiainen.
UCLA scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 64-23 lead at the 17:30 mark on a basket by Earl. However, there was no quit in the Cougars who outscored the Bruins 21-3 to narrow a 67-30 gap at the 11:02 mark to 70-51 with 3:52 to play.
Four Bruins finished in double figures topped by Earl's 18 point effort. Pluimer added 15 points. Tukiainen matched her career-high with 12 points and Campbell chipped in with 11. Ten Bruins scored in all, including the first career points by sophomore guard Alexis Olivier.
The Bruins will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 in a Pac-10 conference battle to be played at USC beginning at Noon.
