LOS ANGELES -- Four baseball players have enrolled at USC for the 2008 spring semester and will be eligible to play this season, head coach Chad Kreuter announced today.

The players are: 6-3 freshman right-handed pitcher/infielder A.J. Johnson (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson HS), 6-6 freshman infielder Mac Sullivan (Long Beach/Los Alamitos HS), 6-6 junior right-handed pitcher Phillip Urso (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School/Claremont-McKenna) and 6-0 sophomore infielder Brandon Young (Los Angeles/L.A. City College).

Johnson batted .320 with five home runs and 20 RBI for Robinson High in Fairfax, Virginia, while leading the district championship squad on the mound as the top pitcher with a 7-1 record, 1.09 ERA and two saves.

Sullivan earned 2007 Orange County Register all-county second team honors after batting .347 with four home runs and 25 RBI at Los Alamitos High.

Urso pitched for the Rockville Express of the Cal Ripken Collegiate League this summer, going 2-3 with a 2.66 ERA in eight starts. In 40 2/3 innings, he allowed 31 hits with 12 walks, 32 strikeouts and a .203 opponents' batting average.

Young played at L.A. City College for his father, Selwyn, and batted .317 last season (44-for-139) with one home run, 20 RBI and seven stolen bases.

'Some of these players will compete for starting jobs while the others will add to the depth of our squad,' said Kreuter.
