Jan. 14, 2008

BERKELEY, Calif. - California junior forward/center Ashley Walker has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 7-13, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today

Walker, a native of Modesto, Calif., averaged 21.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in leading the Golden Bears to their sixth and seventh consecutive victories.

Cal trailed Oregon, 24-22, at halftime, and Walker came up with an outstanding second half, posting 17 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block, to help the Bears rally from a 29-23 deficit with 17:19 remaining in the game. Walker scored four straight points to begin a 17-4 Cal run that put the Bears ahead 40-33 at the 10:01 mark.

After leading all scorers with 25 points against Oregon, Walker held game-high honors again against Oregon State with 17 points.

Walker began the week ninth in school history in scoring and now stands eighth with 1,243 points. She is also approaching 700 career rebounds, as she now has 677, which is the most by any active Pac-10 player.

Walker's steady play has helped Cal stay on pace with the 1983-84 Bears for the best start through 17 games in school history at 15-2. The Bears also are 6-0 in the Pac-10 for the first time in school history and ranked No. 8 (a program best) in the Associated Press poll.

California, which is in first place in the Pac-10 Conference, travels to second-place Arizona this weekend to play Arizona State, Thurs., Jan. 17, and Arizona, Sat., Jan. 19.

Walker has now earned Player of the Week honors twice this season and five times in her career, which is the most by any player in Cal women's basketball history. Devanei Hampton and Jennifer Bennett each have garnered four awards.
