World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame to Induct Eddie Merrins

Jan. 16, 2008

Legendary UCLA golf coach Eddie Merrins will be inducted into the World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame Jan. 17 in ceremonies at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, FL.

Merrins, 75, will join a select group of giants in the field of golf instruction and teaching, including Claude Harmon Sr., Jim Flick, Paul Runyan, Bob Toski and Harvey Penick.

In 1973, Merrins published a book titled Swing the Handle, Not the Clubhead that introduced a new swing concept and became the year's best-selling instructional manual. Thirty-five years later, the book and video maintain their success, and Merrins' reputation as one of golf's foremost instructors continues to grow.

Consistently listed as one of America's Top 100 Teachers, Merrins continues to promote the game and serve as one of its honored ambassadors.

Merrins served as UCLA's head coach from 1975-89 and guided the Bruins to their only NCAA title in men's golf in 1988. He tutored UCLA standouts Tom Pernice Jr., Corey Pavin and Duffy Waldorf, who continue to enjoy success on the PGA Tour. Overall, he led the Bruins to 63 tournament victories, three conference championships and coached 16 All-Americans.

In 1996 he was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. He also is a member of the LSU Sports Hall of Fame, the California Golf Hall of Fame and the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame.
