Brook Lopez Helps Lift Stanford to Victory
Jan. 17, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 19 points, including a tiebreaking jumper with less than 2 minutes left that helped Stanford snap a six-game losing streak to Arizona with a 56-52 victory over the Wildcats on Thursday night.
Lopez's baseline jumper with 1:55 to play put Stanford (14-3, 3-2 Pac-10) on top 54-52. Jordan Hill then missed a shot underneath at the other end for Arizona (11-6, 1-3) with Lopez lurking nearby.
After a turnover by the Cardinal, Nic Wise missed two free throws with 46.6 seconds remaining. Arizona got one more chance after Hill blocked a shot by Anthony Goods. But Jerryd Bayless missed a foul-line jumper and Fred Washington, a 52 percent foul shooter, made two free throws with 5 seconds remaining to put it away.
After allowing the final eight points of a 71-66 loss at Oregon on Sunday, the Cardinal made just enough plays down the stretch to hold on and win this one.
The Wildcats, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Bayless that capped a 13-2 run and made it 41-40 about 6 minutes into the second half. That was all part of a stretch during Stanford went nearly 9 minutes without a field goal, missing eight straight shots and turning the ball over six times.
Taj Finger ended the drought with an easy basket underneath, sparking a 7-0 run that put the Cardinal back up 49-45. The game stayed close from there, in part because Stanford missed a pair of front ends of one-and-ones.
Wise and Chase Budinger led the Wildcats with 13 points apiece and Hill added 11. Arizona has lost four of six games.
Lopez was the only Stanford player to reach double figures. But the Cardinal still managed to improve to 10-1 at home, the only loss coming to No. 4 UCLA earlier this month.
Lopez got off to a dominating start, blocking two shots on the opening possession and altering others to help force the Wildcats into missing their first eight shots. He also scored nine points in the first six minutes as Arizona had no answer to stop him.
Lopez went to the bench for the rest of the half after committing his second foul with 10:22 to go. But Stanford immediately went on a 10-2 run without its star center, getting four points apiece from reserves Landry Fields and Finger to build the lead to 26-14.
The Cardinal led 33-26 at the break.
