No. 6 California Hosts Cal Winter Invitational To Open Spring Season

The No. 6 University of California women's tennis team will host the 2008 Cal Winter Invitational this Friday through Sunday (Jan. 18-20) at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Courts in Berkeley, Calif. In addition to the Golden Bears, the three-day event includes No. 14 Fresno State, No. 57 St. Mary's, and No. 66 Nevada.

Eight players playing in the Winter Invitational are ranked by the ITA singles preseason rankings, with the Bears' No. 10 Susie Babos holding the highest ranking. The other seven players include No. 11 Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State), No. 31 Bojana Bobusic (California), No. 39 Melanie Gloria (Fresno State), No. 48 Maria Mizyuk (Nevada), No. 52 Marion Ravelojaona (California), No. 54 Cristina Visco (California), and No. 94 Renata Kucerkova (Fresno State).

Schedule of Play
Each day will feature eight singles matches followed by eight doubles matches and finish with eight more singles matches.

8:30 a.m. - Warm-up courts available at Hellman Complex Cal (courts 1, 2, and 3), Nevada (courts 4, 5, and 6)
9:30 a.m. - Singles: Cal vs. Nevada (6 matches at Hellman, 2 at Channing)
9:30 a.m. - Warm-up courts available at Channing Fresno State (courts 4, 5, and 6), St. Mary's (courts 7, 8, and 9)
11:45 a.m. - Doubles: Cal vs. St. Mary's at Hellman Complex (4 matches) Nevada vs. Fresno State at Channing Courts (4 matches)
1:15 p.m. - Singles: St. Mary's vs. Fresno State (6 matches at Hellman, 2 at Channing)

9:30 a.m. - Singles: St. Mary's vs. Nevada
11:45 a.m. -  Doubles: Cal vs. Nevada at Hellman, St. Mary's vs. Fresno State at Channing
1:15 p.m. - Singles: Cal vs. Fresno State

9:30 a.m. - Singles: Fresno State vs. Nevada
11:45 a.m. - Doubles: Cal vs. Fresno State at Hellman, Nevada vs. St. Mary's at Channing
1:15 p.m. - Singles: Cal vs. St. Mary's

• Warm-up schedule and court assignments follow the same Friday structure on Saturday and Sunday.

Format of Play
Each team will play three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles. There will be eight flights in singles and four flights in doubles. Each day will consist of eight doubles matches and 16 singles matches. The third set will be played to completion in singles matches. Points will be allotted for each win based on the following decreasing point value ladder to determine a singles and doubles champion at the end of the weekend.

Win at No. 1 position -- 8 points
Win at No. 2 position -- 7 points
Win at No. 3 position -- 6 points
Win at No. 4 position -- 5 points
Win at No. 5 position -- 4 points
Win at No. 6 position -- 3 points
Win at No. 7 position -- 2 points
Win at No. 8 position -- 1 point
