Burdette, McVeigh Lead Cardinal At NCTC Classic

STANFORD, Calif.- Sophomore Lindsay Burdette and freshman Carolyn McVeigh led the Cardinal women's tennis team with strong performances on Friday during the opening day of competition at the NCTC Classic in Indian Wells, Calif.
Burdette and McVeigh both advanced to the round of 16 in the championship singles division and also teamed up to reach the quarterfinal round in doubles.
After a bye in the round of 32, Burdette picked up a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over USC's Gabriela Niculesu in the round of 16. McVeigh cruised past UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round before earning a win over USC's Sara Fansler when she withdrew from a round of 16 match due to illness.
Senior Celia Durkin and junior Isamarie Perez also competed in singles. Durkin outlasted USC's Lindsay Kinstler 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 before falling to UCLA's Remynse 6-0, 6-1. Perez dropped her opening match against Georgia Tech's Noelle Hickey 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Burdette and McVeigh won their quarterfinal match when USC's Kinstler and Fansler withdrew due to illness. Stanford's second team of Durkin and Perez was defeated in the round of 16 by UCLA's Lumpkin and Remynse 8-1.
Play resumes Saturday morning.
