Cougars Complete First Day at Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Washington State swim team completed its first day of competition at the Long Beach Grand Prix Saturday.

The 400 free relay of Sierra Burton, Talor Whitaker, Elyse Peterson and Rugile Mileisyte was the top finishing event for the Cougars, placing third in 3:29.15.

Burton also placed third in the B final of the 100 free in 51.60, and Whitaker placed eighth in the same heat in 52.76 after touching in 52.29 in the preliminaries.

Michaela Ahlin finished third in the 200 butterfly of the B consolation final in 2:03.92. Lina Daugvilaite competed in the B final of the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:01.05.

Competing unattached was volunteer assistant coach Erin McCleave. She placed second in the B final of the 500 freestyle in 4:53.27. McCleave also touched second in the B consolation final of the 100 freestyle in 51.39.

'Today was a great chance to race in a preliminaries/finals competition,' said WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. 'We had solid splits in the relay, and our swimmers stepped up their level of competition from the preliminaries to the evening finals.'

The Cougars will continue competition in Long Beach Sunday and Monday.
