Huskies Earn First Win Against Hawaii
Jan. 20, 2008
HONOLULU - Without dropping a set in singles, the Husky women's tennis team swept Hawaii, 7-0, to earn its first win of the season today at the UH Tennis Complex. Four true freshmen contributed wins to the Washington effort.
Freshman singles player Venise Chan (Hong Kong, China) picked up a second impressive win in as many days, this time knocking off Sophie Kobuch in the top singles match, 7-5, 6-4. Kobuch had recently defeated the nation's 16th-ranked player from Florida State. On Saturday the unranked Chan upset 63rd-ranked Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State, but UW came up short by a 4-3 score.
Head Coach Jill Hultquist was happy with the team's response to Saturday's loss.
'Today the team came out fighting everyone let go of what happened yesterday andearned a routine win,' said Hultquist. 'Venise had another great win against a player who had some big wins last week. We are looking forward to beginning a lot of home matches before we travel again.'
Senior Tara Simpson (Vancouver, B.C.) also moved to 2-0 in dual play with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Natasha Zorec. Fellow senior Allison Rainey (Mercer Island, Wash.) also had an easy win, 6-1, 6-2 over Jennifer Goldman at No. 5.
Freshman Vanja Radunovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) made her first career start and turned it into her first career win, as she defeated Marie Tanaka, 6-1, 6-1, at sixth singles. Radunovic also teamed with freshman Aleksandra Krsljanin (Belgrade, Serbia) to win the deciding doubles match, 9-7.
Chan teamed with freshman Kelsey Anonsen (Victoria, B.C.) to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-1 and provide the opportunity for the other freshman duo to clinch.
Sophomore Aleksandra Malovic (Apeldoorn, Netherlands) had a straight-set win at No. 2 singles over Chloe Bihag, and sophomore Joyce Ardies (Sao Paulo, Brazil) routed Julia Sandborn, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Washington opens its home meet schedule next Saturday against BYU at 12 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
