Jan. 21, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- OREGON STATE freshman guard Talisa Rhea has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 14-20, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Rhea, a native of Juneau, Alaska, averaged 21.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 0.5 steals in two games as the Beavers swept their first Pac-10 weekend of the season. On the week, she shot 51.9 percent from the field (14-of-27) and an impressive 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from three-point range. For the two games, Rhea finished with 42 points, coming off the bench in both games and playing a total of 55 minutes.
In Saturday's 60-35 win over Washington State, Rhea set an Oregon State single-game record with eight three-pointers made (8-of-13), which was also one off tying the Pac-10 record. Her 24 points (in 24 minutes) against the Cougars establishes her career-high, and also marks her first game at the 20-point plateau.
In the 68-64 come-from-behind win over Washington, Rhea was 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, amassing 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. She scored 13 first-half points after the Beavers had fallen behind the Huskies, by as much as 12 at one point, to pull OSU to within six at the half. Over the past four games, Rhea has scored a team-leading 17.0 points per game. She has connected on 18 three-pointers over that stretch en route to a team-leading 43 three-pointers this season.
Oregon State (10-8, 3-4) will play at USC, Thurs., Jan. 24 and at UCLA, Sat., Jan. 26.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Rhea. It is the 28th all-time selection for the Beavers, and their first since Leilani Estavan and Shannon Howell were back-to-back winners in the 2003-04 season.
