UCLA Tennis Update
Jan. 23, 2008
Two Matches This Friday
The UCLA men's and women's tennis teams are scheduled to host one of the first regular-season double-headers in quite some time this Friday, as both teams are scheduled to be in action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Action begins at 1:30 p.m. with the ninth-ranked Bruin men hosting BYU. That match will be followed by the third-ranked women's team hosting No. 13 Baylor at 5:00 p.m. The forecast shows a 70 percent chance of rain for Friday so fans are encouraged to call the UCLA Sports Information Office at (310) 206-7870 as to the status of play.
In the Rankings
The UCLA women's team checks in at No. 3, while the men are listed at No. 9 in the latest team rankings issued by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Individually, UCLA's Riza Zalameda is ranked No. 25 in singles, followed by No. 27 Andrea Remynse, No. 28 Yasmin Schnack and No. 41 Tracy Lin. In doubles, Schnack and Zalameda are ranked 16th. On the men's side, Mathieu Dehaine is ranked No. 32 in singles, while Haythem Abid checks in at No. 38.
Women Take Season Opener against Cal Poly
The Bruin women started their season on the right foot on Monday, taking a 7-0 victory over Cal Poly at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA swept all three doubles matches before winning six singles matches in straight sets. Bruin freshman Andrea Remynse picked up her first dual-match victory, defeating Cal Poly's Steffi Wong, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Zalameda to Play in Pacific Life Open Qualifying
By virtue of winning the National Collegiate Tennis Classic last week, senior Riza Zalameda was given a wild card into the qualifying draw of the WTA Tour's Pacific Life Open, March 10 and 11 in Indian Wells, Calif. It will actually mark the second time that Zalameda has been given a wild card into the qualifying, as she also played in the event back in 2004. She lost to Stephanie Foretz of France that year in three sets.
Match vs. UCI Postponed
UCLA was supposed to have its season opener against UC Irvine on Wednesday, however that match was postponed due to rain. The match was been moved to April 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Pepperdine Right Around the Corner
The UCLA men are hoping to get in at least one match before Monday, otherwise its season opener could be against No. 17 Pepperdine. The two rivals have had some very tough matches in recent years, with the Bruins winning 6-1 last season after the Waves had taken the previous two meetings, including a 4-1 win in the 2006 NCAA Quarterfinals.
National Team Indoors Coming up for Bruin Women
The UCLA women's tennis team will quickly get to find out where it stacks up against the rest of the country, as the Bruins head to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors, Feb. 7-10 in Madison, Wisc. The tournament, which features all of the top teams in the country, is run similar to the NCAA Championships in May. Georgia Tech is the defending champion.
