Huskies Ranked No. 11 in USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll
Jan. 25, 2008
SEATTLE - The Washington Husky softball team is ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll that was released on Wednesday. The Huskies received 436 points and are coming off a No. 3 final ranking last season.
The Huskies went 42-19 in 2007 and made their first trip to the Women's College World Series since 2004, finishing in a tie for third place. Washington has some big shoes to fill with the loss of seniors Dominique Lastrapes and Dena Tyson, both of which were All-Americans during their careers, and first team All-American pitcher Danielle Lawrie, who will miss the upcoming season while competing for Canada at the Beijing Olympics.
Washington does return several key players from last seasons squad, including two-time All-American infielder Ashley Charters and senior pitcher Caitlin Noble, who ranks No. 4 on the UW all-time list with 605 career strikeouts.
Also back are senior outfielder Lauren Greer, who is a two-time Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honoree, and junior outfielder Marnie Koziol, who was an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 pick last season. Junior catcher Alicia Blake also returns and has started 105 games behind the plate over the past two seasons.
The Huskies open the 2008 season Feb. 8-10 at the Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. Washington's first home contest will come when they host the Husky Softball Classic, March 29-April 2.
