BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 11-ranked California men's swimming and diving team fell to No. 3-ranked Arizona, 182-118, on a rainy Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears did capture four events, led by senior Joe Whittington's victory in the 50 free (20.13), sophomore Sean Mahoney's win in the 200 breast (1:58.80) and freshman Damir Dugonjic victory in the 100 breast (55.29). Standout junior diver Sam Helvie was also victorious, capturing the one-meter competition with a score of 346.65.
Cal, under the direction of first-year coach David Durden, saw its dual meet record dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 against Pac-10 competition. The Wildcats improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in conference dual meet action.
Other highlights for the Bears were finishing 1-2 in both the 50 free and 100 breaststroke. Besides Whittington's win in the 50 free, senior Jernej Godec placed second with a time of 20.41. In the 100 breast, senior Richard Hunter placed second with a season-best time of 55.63. Junior Matt Scanlan placed second in the 200 fly with a season-best 1:48.04, and senior Louis Vayo was second in the 200 back with a season-best 1:46.98.
'We had some really good swims today, and some swims that were not as good,' said Durden. 'We definitely were not where we wanted to be at the end of the meet, but we'll take a look at the good and the bad and work on things. I was really impressed with Joe Whittington's time in the 50 free, I thought Damir (Dugonjic) and Richard (Hunter) times in the 100 breast were outstanding, and Sean's (Mahoney) time in the 200 breast was great. Louis Vayo's swim in the 200 back was also impressive.'
Cal will next battle Pac-10 foe Arizona State at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Saturday will be Senior Day, as the Bears will honor the team's 11 seniors - Whittington, Godec, Hunter, Vayo, Dominik Meichtry, Dominic Cathey, William Copeland, Eric Dunipace, Mark Eckert, Michael Jafari and Justin Pollard.
