BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 11-ranked California men's swimming and diving team topped Pac-10 opponent Arizona State, 159.50-123.50, Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bear swimmers had eight different individual winners and captured the 200 medley relay (1:29.16, David Russell, Damir Dugonjic, Jernej Godec, Joe Whittington). Standout junior diver Sam Helvie also won the one-meter competition for the second day in a row with a score of 351.52. He had won the one-meter board Friday versus Arizona with a score of 346.65.

Cal, under the direction of first-year coach David Durden, improved its dual meet record dropped to 3-1 overall and 2-1 against Pac-10 competition. The Sun Devils dropped to 2-7 and 1-3 in conference dual meet action. Saturday was Senior Day as the Bears honored this year's 11 seniors - Whittington, Godec, Richard Hunter, Louis Vayo, Dominik Meichtry, Dominic Cathey, William Copeland, Eric Dunipace, Mark Eckert, Michael Jafari and Justin Pollard.

Veterans Vayo, Godec, Whittington and Eckert all won races in their final home meet. Vayo placed first in the 200 free with a season-best 1:37.04, Godec won the 50 free in 20.28, Whittington won the 100 free in 44.96 and Eckert captured the 200 back in a season-best 1:45.00. Other individual winners for Cal included junior David Russell in the 100 back (50.09), freshman Damir Dugonjic in the 100 breast (54.74), junior Matt Scanlan in the 200 fly (1:48.16) and sophomore Sean Mahoney in the 200 breast (2:00.87).

'Anytime you compete in a Pac-10 dual meet you want to win,' said Durden. 'And, to send a group of seniors swimming in their last home meet out on a good note is important. Our guys did a really nice job of racing the last two days. We are content where we are at this point of the season, but we are also looking at getting a couple more guys healthy and continuing to get better.'

Cal will next travel to Southern California to swim at Division II powerhouse Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday, Feb. 7 and at No. 20 USC on Friday, Feb. 8 at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
