Golfers Begin 2008 Season in Arizona

The second-ranked UCLA men's golf team travels to Tucson, Ariz. Monday to open its 2008 season at the annual PING Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 28-29 at Arizona National GC.
The Bruins, winners of all three of their events in the Fall, will feature a solid lineup of two seniors, one junior, a sophomore and a freshman. This group also includes two All-Americans.
Senior All-American Kevin Chappell leads the Bruins with a scoring average of 71.2 in six rounds during two stroke play events in the Fall. He was one-under par collectively and recorded a pair of Top 5 finishes.
Senior Craig Leslie was one-over par in two stroke play events and boasted the team's second best scoring average at 72.1. He recorded a pair of Top 20 finishes, including a tie for third at the season-opening Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge.
All-American Lucas Lee, a junior, recorded one Top 20 finish in the Fall. Lee also attempted to qualify for the PGA Tour, but did not advance.
Freshman Philip Francis tied for 13th in both his Fall events and averaged 73.3 to rank fourth on the team. Francis also won all four of his matches at the Match Play Championship.
Sophomore Jason Kang, an NCAA Tournament participant last season as a freshman, tied for 20th at the Bruins' Fall opener in Seattle.
Junior All-American Erik Flores recorded three rounds under 70 during the Fall schedule to lead the team and finished with the Bruins' third-best scoring average of 72.5. Flores also tied for third at the season-opening event. He will compete as an individual.
