Jan. 28, 2008

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- STANFORD senior guard Candice Wiggins has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 21-27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Wiggins, a native of San Diego, Calif., showed her senior leadership as she scored 28 points in the No. 7/7 Cardinal impressive 72-52 victory over No. 8/8 California. The All-American also went 14-of-14 from the free-throw line, tying a Pac-10 record for percentage from the line (min. 10 att.) and one shy of the Conference record for consecutive free throws in a single game (15-15, Maylana Martin, UCLA v. Kentucky, March 15, 1999).

Wiggins also pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists in the victory. She currently sits atop the Conference in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game, and steals (2.30 per game).

The senior is also making a push up the historical charts in both the Stanford annals as well as the Conference records. Her 2,204 career points places her only 11 points behind Kate Starbird's school record. She currently sits sixth all-time in scoring in the Pac-10, behind Lisa Leslie (2,414), Tanja Kostic (2,349), Tina Thompson (2,248), Adia Barnes (2,237) and Starbird.

Stanford (17-3, 7-2) now sits only a game behind rival California (17-3, 8-1) for the Pac-10 lead. The Cardinal host USC Thurs., Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. and UCLA on Sat., Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.

The Player of the Week honor is the third of the year for Wiggins and the eighth of her career, tying her for the most in Conference history with five other players. It is the 60th all-time selection for the Cardinal.
