Charles and Milewski Named CU Athletes of the Week
BOULDER-Senior track member Hugh Charles and Monica Milewski, were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 21-27. This is Charles' third athlete of the week honor of the year, and fifth of the fourth of his career. However, his first two awards this year came as the running back for the football team, but his first career honor came in 2006 as a member of the track team. This is Milewski's first honor of the year and the fifth of her career; she is also the career leader for this award among tennis players.
Charles, a Keller, Texas (Keller) native, recorded a jump of 24-04.25 in the prelims to qualify him for a spot in the finals. In the finals, he jumped 25-00.00 to record a personal best, and NCAA Provisional Mark and the fourth best mark in CU school history. He won the event by over two and a half feet as the runner-up (Ryan Billups, Colorado State) only recorded a mark of 22-05.25. It was the longest jump for any Buff since 1974 and ties the fifth best mark in the nation this season. Charles did not compete for the track and field team in 2007, and this was his first competitive jump in almost two years (Big 12 Championships, 2006).
Milewski, a Park Ridge, Ill., (Main South) native, was one of three Colorado players to earn a singles victory last Friday. Milewski, ranked No. 36 nationally, won her match in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) over Dunja Antunovic at the top singles slot. It was her second triumph of the dual season and the 47th of her career. Despite her convincing win, the Buffaloes came on the short end falling to DePaul, 4-3.
Others nominated for this week's award were Richard Roby (men's basketball), Jackie McFarland (women's basketball) and Troi Windham (track and field).
Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Senior, San Bernardino, Calif.
Roby tallied his fourth double-double of the season (ninth career) with 13 points and a season-high tying 14 rebounds in the Buffaloes, 66-62 home loss to Missouri. The senior guard also recorded his 100th career double-digit scoring game. 13 of Roby's 14 boards were on the defensive end, a career high.
Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Senior, Derby, Kan.
McFarland averaged 21.5 points, six rebounds and two steals in two Big 12 games for this past week. In Colorado's 59-41 home win over Kansas, she recorded 15 points (3-of-5 from the floor), three rebounds, three steals and a block. She followed up that performance with an even more impressive 28 point (8-of-14 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free throw line) and nine rebound game in the 62-44 loss at Texas Tech.
