California Golden Bears at UCLASaturday, Feb. 2, Noon, Los Angeles

On the BlocksThe California Golden Bears said goodbye to Spieker Aquatics Complex last Saturday with a win over Arizona State in their final home meet of the season. Now fifth-ranked Cal takes to the road three more times this year, beginning with a trip to Southern California and dates with USC on Feb. 1 and UCLA on Feb. 2.

Last time out ...The fifth-ranked California women's swimming team rebounded from its loss to Arizona with a 158-129 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Jan. 26 in Pac-10 dual meet competition on senior day at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal improved its dual meet record to 3-1 (2-1 in league play). Senior Emily Silver capped off her final home meet of the season in style, earning victories in the 50 (23.03), 100 (49.93) and 200 (1:48.57) freestyle relays to earn the freestyle trifecta. On Friday, the No. 4-ranked Arizona Wildcats outlasted heavy rains and Cal to claim a 170.50-129.50 dual meet victory at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats got off on the right track with first and second place finishes in the 400 Medley Relay (the first event of the day). Arizona's foursome of Hailey DeGolia, Annie Chandler, Ana Agy and Lacey Nymeyer posted a winning time of 3:40.11. Cal claimed third and fourth place finishes in the relay. Lauren Rogers, Alexandra Ellis, Amada Sims and Emily Silver posted a third-place time of 3:42.64. Silver nearly chased down Arizona's Taylor Boughman from behind in the final leg for second place.

Silver earns honorSenior Emily Silver was named the Cal Student Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. In her final home meet of the season, Silver capped it off in style, earning victories in the 50 (23.03), 100 (49.93) and 200 (1:48.57) freestyle relays to earn the freestyle trifecta versus Arizona State on Saturday. The day before her three race wins against ASU, Silver captured first-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle events on Friday against the Arizona Wildcats. Silver also captured second place in the 200 IM against the Wildcats, touching the wall just 00.02 seconds off the first place time.

Coaches Corner

The Cal coaching staff talks about the USC, UCLA match-ups this weekend.

'The meets against the Arizona schools gave us a chance to race some of the best competition in the country and look at the areas we need to improve on in the upcoming meets. Traveling to LA for USC and UCLA will provide another opportunity for us to race great athletes and take another step toward our goals for the end of the season.'

Scouting USCThe No. 21 USC women's swimming team returned to Pac-10 conference dual meet action on Jan. 25, but fell against northwest rival Washington at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. The rain that drenched Southern California last week took a well-timed break, but the meet was still raced in damp, low 50s weather as the women dropped to 4-3, 1-3. USC senior Whitney Hentzen and juniors Rachael Waller and Rebecca Soni each won a pair of races to lead the Women of Troy. Waller touched first in the 100y (51.15) and 200y free (1:50.12) while Soni provided her usual sweep in the breaststroke events, gliding to wins in the 100y (1:01.97) and 200y breast (2:14.09). Hentzen won the distance events, reaching the wall first in the 500y (4:52.60) and 1000y free (9:58.55), the latter a season-best effort.

Scouting UCLAThe UCLA swimmers haven't seen any action in the pool since Dec. 1 at the USA Short Course Nationals in Atlanta. Southern California rains wiped out the chance for the Bruins to compete in its dual meet with USD in October and UCSD in January as well. In Atlanta, junior Anna Poteete notched her second lifetime-best as she finished 14th in the 100 free. She bettered her previous top time (49.75) in the prelim round with a swim of 49.37, which is an NCAA Consideration time. She swam 49.78 in the final. Senior Chiemi Yamamoto swam a season-best 2:18.61 in the 200 breast to finish 28th overall. Freshman Emily Bibb swam a season-best in the 100 free, finishing 61st overall in a time of 51.24. Freshmen Dani Milligan (16:50.75) and Sam Vanden Berge (16:52.76) both swam NCAA Consideration times in the 1650 freestyle as Milligan was 24th and Vanden Berge finished 27th.
