Bruin Swim & Dive Set To Battle NorCal Foes Stanford And California
Jan. 30, 2008
The #14 Bruin swim and dive team will play host to two top-five programs this weekend as No. 3 Stanford and No. 5 California come to town for Pac-10 dual meet action. UCLA will face Stanford (4-1, 3-1 Pac-10) on Friday at 2:00 pm and California (3-1, 2-1 Pac-10) on Saturday at noon.
While UCLA (4-1, 3-1 Pac-10) hosts the Stanford swim team on Friday at Men's Gym Pool, the divers will head to USC to compete in a four-way meet with USC, California, Stanford and the Bruins. UCLA and Stanford's results will be scored and added to the swim results for the dual meet score. On Saturday, the divers will return to the campus of UCLA to host California at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center and the swimmers will compete at Men's Gym Pool.
Stanford is 23-3 all-time against UCLA, while California holds a 16-9 advantage. The Bruins last beat Stanford in 2006 at home by a score of 180-120. The last victory over the Golden Bears for UCLA was in 1999.
The Bruin swimmers have not competed in a live meet since December as weather forced the cancellation of a dual meet with UC San Diego earlier in January. The swimmers are chomping at the bit and ready to compete this weekend.
UCLA is led by senior Nicolette Teo and junior Anna Poteete as both rank among some of the fastest swimmers in the country. Poteete is currently ranked 14th in the 50 free (22.70) and Teo ranks 11th (1:01.57) in the 100 breast and 24th (2:15.00) in the 200 breast. Poteete's 50 free time and Teo's 100 breast time are automatic qualifying marks for the National Championships, which will take place in late March in Columbus, OH.
On the diving side, junior Marisa Samaniego leads the way as she looks to be en route to another All-American season. Samaniego has qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships on both one meter and three meter and has continued to improve on her dive list week in and week out.
After this weekend's competition, the Bruins will host one more home meet, versus rival USC on Friday, February 15.
