SEATTLE - Two-time All-America infielder Ashley Charters has been named to two different National Player of the Year Watch lists heading into the upcoming season. Charters, a senior from Beaverton, Ore., is a career .378 hitter and is a three-time All-Pac-10 honoree.
The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) named Charters to its Top 50 Watch List for the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year on Wednesday. The award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.
The 2008 Preseason Watch List is comprised of 50 players representing 34 schools and 14 different NCAA Division I Conferences. The ASA will announce 25 finalists on April 9, before releasing a list of 10 finalists on May 7. The final three players will be announced May 21, while the winner will be announced prior to the start of the 2008 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Also this week, Charters was selected to the CSTV.com 2008 Softball Player of the Year Watch list. A total of 20 players received votes from the CSTV.com Softball Player of the Year Watch panel.
Charters put up career numbers last season, batting .391 with nine double, seven home runs, 59 runs scored, 33 RBI and 36 stolen bases. She was a second team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America selection last season and was a third team pick in 2006. She has also been named a first team All-Pac-10 infielder the past two seasons after earning second team honors as a freshman.
Charters and the Huskies open the 2008 season on Feb. 8 at the three-day Sportco Spring Kick-off Classic in Las Vegas.
