Lacey's 21 Points Leads ASU Past Oregon State
Jan. 31, 2008
The game was much different than the one the two teams played earlier this month in Corvallis when the Sun Devils had to overcome a 14-point deficit in the second half in a 69-60 win.
ASU forced 24 Oregon State turnovers and held a 34-18 advantage in points in the paint to secure its third consecutive win. Sun Devil post players Lacey (8-11 FGs), Dosty (5-6 FGs), Kirsten Thompson (3-4 FGs, 8 points) and Becca Tobin (3-4 FGs, 6 points) collectively scored 46 points and shot a combined 76 percent (19-25) from the field.
After getting out to an early 14-4 lead the Sun Devils (14-7, 8-2 Pac-10) quickly saw their early double-digit advantage cut to two after Oregon State went on a 10-2 run. Arizona State countered the Beavers' run with a 17-5 scoring burst to close out the half and take 33-19 lead at the intermission.
Arizona State did not let up after halftime, scoring 20 of the first 28 points in the second half. Back-to-back layups by Lacey followed by another layup by Tobin gave ASU a 26-point cushion, 53-27, with 11:23 remaining.
The Sun Devils, who shot a season-best 57.1 percent from the field, would lead by as many as 29 in the second half.
Talisa Rhea led Oregon State (10-11, 3-7 Pac-10) with 14 points. The Beavers came into the game ranked second in the Pac-10 in both three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made per game. On Thursday they shot a dismal 13 percent (1-8) from beyond the arc against a Sun Devil squad which came into the game as the Pac-10's top-rated team in three-point field goal percentage defense.
