No. 2 Stanford, No. 14 Fresno State Rained Out

Jan. 31, 2008

STANFORD, Calif.- Wintry conditions once again halted the start of the season for the No. 2 Stanford women's tennis team.

Thursday's scheduled match against No. 14 Fresno State looked as if it would indeed take place. Stanford had already tried to play its season opener against UC Davis twice before that match was eventually cancelled on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Stanford and Fresno State were able to wrap up doubles play before the rain wiped out any chance of singles competition taking place.

The Cardinal took the doubles point, winning matches at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. At No. 2, Whitney Deason and Jessica Nguyen downed Fresno State's No. 29 Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova 8-6. At the No. 3 spot, Celia Durkin and Carolyn McVeigh cruised past Danon Beatty and Vanessa Heroux 8-3.

Fresno State picked up an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot, as the nation's top duo of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe defeated Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette.

The teams could potentially reschedule the match, but that has not yet been determined at this time.

Stanford is back in action tomorrow against No. 41 UNLV at 11 a.m.
