The recent coaching change has put a new face at the helm of the Washington State women's basketball team. WSU Head Coach June Daugherty is in the middle of her first season with the Cougars after spending 11 years with the Washington Huskies.
The veteran coach has a history of turning programs around. Daugherty carried a 314-213 career record into this season, and led Washington to nine postseason appearances in 11 seasons. One of Daugherty's goals for the WSU women's basketball program is to put a product on the floor people will want to watch.
'There is a lot of excitement in the air about WSU women's basketball,' said Daugherty. 'Everywhere we go, whether we are home or away, people are talking about it. It's great to see people coming out and supporting us, and I think if we just keep playing harder and keep improving, we have a chance to really pack the house.'
The Cougars are currently fourth in the conference for home game attendance, averaging 2,376 fans per game. The 1,247 fans at Friel Court for the Husky/Cougar match-up earlier this month were the most since Jan.22, 2005 when 1,460 fans showed up to support WSU in a game against Washington.
'We have some incredibly passionate fans as Cougars. We've been able to get a lot of new fans to come into the arena to see what this new championship era is all about,' said Daugherty. 'My aim is to sellout every women's basketball game on the Palouse. That's my goal, and I'm excited about it.'
