Trojans Begin 2008 Spring Schedule At UH-HILO Intercollegiate
Feb. 5, 2008
The No. 7 USC men's golf team, led by defending NCAA individual champion Jamie Lovemark, begins its spring schedule at the 2008 CordeValle Collegiate, Wednesday through Friday (Feb. 6-8), at the UH-HILO Intercollegiate Tournament at the Waikoloa Village G.C. in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
USC, which finished the fall slate with three consecutive third-place finishes, is one of 18 teams competing in the 54-hole tournament that begins at 7 a.m. (HST) each day.
The Trojans have been led by different golfers in all four of their fall tournaments. Junior Tom Glissmeyer was the high finisher in USC's opening-season eighth-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate, sophomores Rory Hie and Jamie Lovemark tied for sixth at the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview, Lovemark was second at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational and freshman Tim Sluiter and Hie tied for ninth at the CordeValle Collegiate.
Lovemark, who won virtually every individual award available to an NCAA men's golfer as a freshman, again leads the Trojans in stroke average at 71.33. After debuting as a sophomore with a tie for sixth at the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview, he followed it with a second-place effort at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate and a tie for 16th at the CordeValle Collegiate. His opening-round 68 at the Isleworth was USC's first sub-70 round this season. An All-American first teamer as a freshman, Lovemark missed USC's season-opener while representing the United States at the Walker Cup.
Hie is averaging 72.75 strokes per round. Like Lovemark, he has a pair of top 10 finishes and his 68 at the CordeValle Collegiate ties Lovemark for low round on the team.
Like Hie, Glissmeyer is averaging 72.75 strokes per round. He posted a season-best tie for seventh at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate and has two other top 20 finishes. He has carded a season-low of 70 twice.
Sluiter is next on the team with a stroke average of 73.17. His tied for ninth at the CordeValle Collegiate. (including a final-round 69) and tied for 11th at the Fall Preview and 14th at the Inverness Intercollegiate.
Redshirt freshman Bo DeHuff and freshman Gavin Reid both played at the Inverness Intercollegiate, finishing tied for 50th and 71st, respectively. DeHuff was also tied for 50th at the CordeValle Collegiate. Freshman Daniel Park played at the Fall Preview, tying for 55th. Reid also was 83rd at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate.
Freshman Matthew Giles, from Cronulla, New South Wales, Australia, is a spring semester enrollee who will make his Trojan debut this weekend, playing with Glissmeyer, Lovemark, Hie and Sluiter.
