Cardinal Notch First Victory Of The Spring In Rout Over Hawai'i

Feb. 6, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - No.40 Stanford picked up their first win of the spring today over Hawai'i on a breezy, sunny day at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal dispatched the Rainbow Warriors 7-0 in an impressive first win of the season. Stanford improves to 1-4, while Hawai'i falls to 1-5.

Stanford swept the doubles match-ups, with junior Matt Bruch and freshman teammate Ted Kelly rapidly capturing their match, 8-3. Greg Hirshman and Richard Wire provided the clinching victory with their defeat of Dennis Lajola and Craig Faulk, 8-5, to make it 1-0 Stanford overall. Meanwhile, junior Blake Muller and freshman Alex Clayton put the icing on the cake with their 8-5 triumph.

The No. 4, 5, and 6 singles positions were key for Stanford today as Kelly, ranked No. 41 in the nation in singles, would increase the Cardinal lead by two as he quickly overcame Faulk, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles. Muller, would make it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinal as he rebounded from last weekend's tough loss to defeat Jeff Fitch, 6-1, 6-3. Kevin Kaiser captured his first dual-match victory of the season and clinched the victory for the Cardinal, defeating Hawai'i's Spence Mendoza in No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

The final three matches proved to be tough for the Cardinal, as there were no decisive victories to be had. Lajola, Hawai'i's standout freshman, took second-ranked Clayton to ten games in each set. Wire found himself in a 2-5 hole in the second set, but battled back to steal the victory from the Rainbow Warriors' Andreas Weber, and Bruch traded games with Hawai'i's Sascha Heineman late in the first set, eventually winning the set 7-5.

'Hawai'i has a great team, and their top three are especially good,' said Stanford head coach John Whitlinger. 'Alex and Rich both got two good breaks in their matches, Matt struggled a little bit before pulling away, but I'm really pleased with our guys. They feel good about this victory and they should. There were lots of positives today.'

Stanford will continue their tough schedule with their fourth consecutive home match when they meet BYU this Friday at 1:30 p.m. Last year the Cougars defeated the Cardinal at home, 5-2.
