Spears Nabs Second Big 12 Honor

BOULDER - University of Colorado's Brittany Spears has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week by a media voting panel for games the week of Feb. 5-11.

 

This is the second Big 12 Rookie of the Week honor for Spears has she was also cited on Jan. 7. It is the third Big 12 honor for the Buffs this season as Bianca Smith was named Player of the Week on Dec. 10.

 

Spears averaged 19 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per contest while hitting 48 percent from the field in games against Nebraska and No. 10 (AP)/10 (WBCA) Oklahoma last week. The freshman from Pasadena, Calif., tallied 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks while going 6-of-6 from the free throw line against Nebraska. She scored 19 points and had five rebounds and two blocks against the Sooners while hitting 54 percent from the field (7-of-13) and hitting a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line.

 

Spears leads all Big 12 freshmen in scoring (13.8 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg), blocked shots (1.5 bpg) and free-throw percentage (.875) while ranking second in steals (1.9 spg) and fourth in assists (1.8 apg). She is the Big 12's top free-throw shooter in league only games as she has made 93.3 percent (28-of-30) during the conference schedule.  Her 307 points this season are the most by a CU freshman since Erin Scholz had 343 in 1993-94.

 

Colorado continues Big 12 action by traveling to play the University of Kansas on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. MST at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
