Saylor Makes U.S. Junior Cross Country Team
Feb. 16, 2008
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Washington's Lauren Saylor earned one of six spots on the U.S. Junior Cross Country team today with a sixth-place finish in the U.S. Cross Country Championships at Mission Bay Park on Saturday.
Saylor, in the midst of her freshman track season and coming off a strong freshman cross country campaign in the fall as part of UW's eighth-place NCAA squad, covered the 6-kilometer course in 21:36. Her finish earns her a spot on the national team that will travel to the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, Great Britain on March 30.
'The race went exactly how I planned it out with my coaches,' said Saylor. 'On the first lap I wanted to position myself with the leaders. The second lap I was just hoping to keep contact with the leaders, then on the last lap I could just go for it. The last part of the course was tougher than I thought, it's a deceiving course, but I'm really happy to be going to Edinburgh.'
Prep stars Jordan Hasay and German Fernandez placed first and second in the meet, with Stanford freshman Alexandra Gits coming in third. Hasay's winning time was 20:32.
Saylor will join fellow Husky Anita Campbell across the pond for the World Championships. Campbell qualified for the Canadian Senior team in December of 2007. Also competing will be recent Husky signee Kendra Schaaf who has a spot on the Canadian Junior team.
The 2008 USA Cross Country Championships will be televised in association with the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships February 24, from 5-7 p.m. on ESPN 2.
