Feb. 18, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE sophomore Matt Brooklyn and WASHINGTON freshman Venise Chan have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 11-17, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Brooklyn, playing out of the No. 1 position in singles, remained undefeated (5-0) over the weekend to lead the Sun Devils to victories on the road over Marquette and Northwestern and maintain their undefeated record in dual match play (5-0). On Saturday, Brooklyn battled back from a set down to take his match against Trent Hagan of Marquette 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-7), leading the Sun Devils to a 4-3 victory. In Sunday's 6-1 team victory over Northwestern, Brooklyn defeated Northwestern's top player, Marc Dwyer, 6-2, 7-5.
Arizona State is making waves in the ITA rankings as it checks in at No. 37 and has moved up nine spots since the beginning of the year. The Sun Devils face a stiff challenge this week as they take on No. 8 UCLA, Fri., Feb. 22 and No. 6 USC on Sat., Feb. 23 in non-conference matches.
Chan has quickly emerged as one of the Huskies' bright young stars as she has burst onto the collegiate scene, going undefeated in her first nine matches at the top position. Chan battled through illness over the weekend, but was still able to defeat two top players from the Big Ten. On Saturday, she lost the first set to Brooke Beier of No. 43 Purdue, but rebounded to win 2-6, 6-0, 7-5. Chan returned on Sunday, seemingly with no ill effects from the day before, to dominate No. 68 Illinois' top player Megan Fudge, 6-0, 6-1.
Having already equaled their combined win total of the past two years, the No. 48 Huskies (8-1) will face a tough start to Conference play as they host No. 3 Stanford on Fri., Feb. 22 and No. 9 California on Sat., Feb. 23. Both matches will take place at noon.
This is the second Pac-10 Player of the Week award for Brooklyn and the first for Chan. The award is the third for the ASU men's team and the second for the Washington women's team.
