Feb. 18, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- STANFORD sophomore center Jayne Appel has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 11-17, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Appel, a native of Pleasant Hill, Calif., led Stanford to a sweep of the Arizona schools, averaging a double-double (14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds) and adding an average of 5.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.5 blocks over the weekend. The victories helped set up a showdown this weekend with rival California, whom Stanford trails by a game for first place in the Pac-10 standings.
The sophomore opened the weekend with 12 points and 11 rebounds against Arizona and displayed her all-around athleticism as she also dished out five assists, blocked three shots and had four steals. The double-double effort was her eighth of the year.
On Saturday, Appel only narrowly missed her ninth double-double of the year as her 17 points and nine rebounds led the Cardinal to a dominating 79-57 win over Arizona State, the third-place team in the Conference. Appel also led the team with six assists in the victory, her second highest output of the season.
Appel currently sits fifth in the Pac-10 in scoring (14.6 ppg), second in rebounding (9.0 rpg), and first in blocked shots (2.30 bpg).
Second-place Stanford takes its 12-game winning streak on the road as they face first-place California on Sat., Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net. Stanford won the first meeting of the year in impressive fashion, 72-52.
The Player of the Week honor is the third of Appel's career and the 62nd for the Cardinal all-time.
